Art has transformed my introversion into a powerful means of expression, serving as a joyful outlet shaped by my experiences with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and a deep fascination with identity and human connections.

My name is James Okore, a Toronto-based contemporary interdisciplinary artist with a Fine Arts Diploma from Centennial College (2012) and a BFA in Drawing & Painting from OCADU (2021). My work primarily features vibrant portrait paintings, blending Realism and Surrealism to juxtapose reality with imaginative environments. These pieces not only reflect on my own personal experiences, but the experiences of others and aim to challenge the viewers’ perceptions.

My artistic journey began at age 6, following a severe motor-vehicle accident. The collision, witnessed by my mother and brother, left me unconscious and in critical condition. Despite the grim prognosis, the support of my religious family and skilled medical team helped me survive. After weeks in a coma and a lengthy recovery involving relearning basic skills, I discovered my passion for art during rehabilitation.

Art became a crucial outlet for me, transforming my introversion into a powerful means of expression. Preparing canvases, mixing colours, and building layers have become sources of great joy. My experience with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) has shaped my perspective and creative process, evident in my fascination with identity and human connections.

My mission is to create meaningful "time capsules"on canvas for families, friends, and neighbours, capturing moments and relationships with detailed and expressive brushstrokes. Through my work, I aim to evoke emotions and inspire joy, reflecting on the importance of identity and the impact of art in transforming lives. My art is a testament to resilience and a desire to make a positive difference.
